DEBT FUND - INVESTMENT OPTION

RISK AVERSE INVESTERS COULD LOOK AT INVESTING IN DEBT FUND.
Partha Sinha  TNN

Returns on these funds depend on interest rate decisions, credit rating & inflation in the economy

Most Indians, when it comes to investing, are risk averse. This is one of the main reasons why Indians prefer to keep a large sum of money in bank fixed deposits (FDs), even though there are alternative investment products which can give higher returns on a posttax basis when kept for more than three years, better liquidity but come with just a bit of higher risks. One of such alternative investments is fixed income funds, also called debt funds, by mutual fund houses.

WHAT ARE DEBT FUNDS?

SHISHA (HOOKAH) - ITS DEADLIER THAN TOBACCO

SHISHA MYTH SHATTERED - ITS DEADLIER THAN THE CIGARETTE.
DurgeshNandan Jha   New Delhi:

When the parents of Anika Sarkar (name changed) decided to organise a party to celebrate her 16th birthday , she made a special request. The teenager asked them to arrange for flavoured hookahs. Initially reluctant, her parents later relented.

Actually , smoking a hookah, or shisha as it is popularly referred to, is not as harmless as Anika's parents thought it was. The United States' Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that the amount of smoke inhaled during a typical hookah session is around 90,000 ml. Compare that with the 500600 ml inhaled when smoking a cigarette and it puts the risk of oral and lung cancer in the frightful perspective.

ARMY MUST ENGAGE PAKISTAN

ARMY MUST ENGAGE PAKISTAN’S FOR CBMs AND ‘RECONCILIATION’ AS EFFORTS FOR ‘RESOLUTION’ OF DIFFERENCES’ AND ‘COMPOSITE DIALOGUES’ ARE STALLED
A rising nation at cross roads must think out of the box and take risks. Helmut Kohl Chancellor of Germany (1982-88) displayed courage to bring down the Berlin wall after a ‘Reconciliation Payment’ to Soviet Union to remove troops. Germany went through pain, but Germany rose as a power. Maynard Keynes ‘Motor Biked From King’s College Cambridge to London’ to advise the Bank Of England and saved Britain’s economy after WW 1. Adam Smith changed rules on defence spending by saying, “Security is the first economic duty of a Sovereign”. So did Ashoka to consolidate, India and as Chankaya advises.

AFTER US LIFTED SANCTIONS PM MODI HAS MADE STRATEGIC MOVES AND A US –INDIA- IRAN NOOSE SEEMS TO BE TIGHTENING AROUND PAKISTAN

iran-nuclear-program-mapA perception that has irked Pakistan and China, is that India is becoming USA’s close strategic friend and ally, and this has become a reality over time. India’s military and foreign policy moves and exercises with Intelligence exchange , inter-operability with military purchases of over $ 12 bill and a technology transfer deal (DTTI) are glaring pointers. In the maritime domain India has established close co-operation in the region and with USA’s allies Australia and Japan, and brought in Japan to invest in Iran’s Chahbahar port, sealed with $ 500 mill for Chahbahar port development and connectivity to the Central Asian Republic (CAR) by PM Modi after USA lifted sanctions. PM Modi courageously signed a Joint Strategic Vision with President Obama for Asia Pacific which includes the South and East China Seas and Senkaku islands to ensure Freedom of Navigation as per UNCLOS 1982, though short of joint or coordinated patrols, that USA expects.

KARGIL WAR HERO LAUDED ON FLIGHT

KARGIL WAR HERO LAUDED ON FLIGHT

Three Armed Forces veterans deserve a special salute today. One for being a Kargil war hero, the second for bringing public attention to him, and the third for sharing their story widely on social media.  Naik Deep Chand, who lost both legs and his right arm in the 1999 Kargil War, was flying Indigo Airlines recently. As soon as the pilot of the aircraft, Harish Nayani, an ex-IAF fighter pilot himself, learned about this, he made an announcement to the passengers that they had a war hero aboard.

All 180 passengers on the flight got up and gave a resounding round of applause to Naik Deep Chand.

MY FATHER, LET MY COUNTRY AWAKE

MY FATHER, LET MY COUNTRY AWAKE

By  PG KAMATH

India has a bicameral democracy with the PM as its executive head.
Unlike in a Presidential system, he is not able to take experts in
various fields as ministers in the cabinet.  They have to come through
the legislature route either from Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha. The latter
is considered a backdoor entry to the treasury bench;  notorious among
them was the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who had the
temerity to be the executive head of our country for a decade and
undermined his high office, by abdicating his authority to an Indian
national of a foreign origin? He, thus surrendered his Constitutional
authority, solely to be in the front seat, so that the Signora can do
the safe backseat driving.

HINDUS IN PAKISTAN

HINDUS IN PAKISTAN

" If Muslims in India constantly crib to have no say and no power, they should come to Pakistan to see the plight of minority Hindus with their own eyes. They'll never complain and learn to live peacefully with their Hindu brethren in India." -Asma Jahangir, Human rights activist, Pakistan

Asma's right. When pitted against the oppressed Hindus in Pakistan, the Muslims of India are indeed far better. A few days back there was a news that Hindus in Balochistan region are abducted and converted to Islam. The family members of those who've been abducted often avoid lodging complaints for fear of dire consequences. Many Hindus in Pakistan's Balochistan, Sindh and NWFP regions, embraced Islam for survival. Has any Muslim in India ever been forced to accept Hinduism in order to live in this country?

SMOKING - COST YOU RS ONE CRORE

SMOKING CAN COST YOU Rs ONE CRORE

30-year-old who smokes five cigarettes a day would lose more than that in 30 years
If the dreadful pictures on cigarette packs can't make you quit smoking, here's a more alarming warning.
Smoking burns a bigger hole in your finances than you can possibly imagine. ET Wealth estimates that a 30-year-old who smokes five cigarettes a day would lose over `1 crore due to the habit by the time he is 60.

As the world gets ready to observe No-Tobacco Day on 31 May, we did some number crunching to find out the real cost a smoker pays. The biggest drain on the wallet is the price of cigarettes.Cigarettes are priced around `10-15, but we have assumed a price of `12 per stick. If a person smokes five cigarettes a day, he spends `60 daily--or `1,800 a month.

BHANDARI - DID NETAJI LIVED UNDER THIS NAME IN BENGAL ASHRAM

DID NETAJI LIVE AS `BHANDARI' IN BENGAL ASHRAM IN 1960S?                            Kingshuk Nag Hyderabad:

Was Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose living incognito as `K K Bhandari' in 1963 in Shalumari Ashram in north Bengal? A reading of one of the files on Netaji, declassified on May 27, would seem to suggest that the topmost levels of the government were discussing this possibility in 1963. One of the declassified files refers repeatedly to the contents of this Netaji-asBhandari file but the latter file itself is not there.

It all began with a letter sent to the Prime Minister (Jawaharlal Nehru) by Ramani Ranjan Das, secretary of the Shalumari Ashram “in connection with Subhas Chandra Bose“ in 1963. Immediately ,a reference was made by K Ram, principal private secretary to the PM, to the director of Intelligence Bureau (IB) B N Mallik in a top secret memo on May 23, 1963. On June 12, Malik replied in a top secret note (No III (51)63(6) about Bhandari.

SAMUGARH 1658 - FATEFUL TIPPING THAT FIXED OUR FUTURE

NOT PLASSEY 1757 BUT SAMUGARH 1658: FATEFUL TIPPING POINT THAT FIXED THE SUBCONTINENT'S FUTURE COURSE

Murad Ali Baig

On May 29, 1658, India's history changed forever. Aurangzeb's victory over his brother Dara Shikoh marked the beginning of Islamic bigotry in India that not only alienated Hindus but the much more moderate Sufis and Shias as well. Aurangzeb's narrow Sunni beliefs were to make India the hotbed of Muslim fundamentalists, long before the Wahhabis of Saudi Arabia sponsored the fanatics of Taliban and Islamic State.
Two great Mughal armies, led by Shah Jahan's eldest son Dara Shikoh and his third son Aurangzeb, clashed on a dusty plain 20 km southeast of Agra.It was not only a battle for the Mughal throne, but a battle for the very soul of India.

ON RELIGION - ESSAY BY KHUSHWANT SINGH

AN ESSAY FROM THE BOOK “WHY I SUPPORTED EMERGENCY”  :: Essays and Profiles

“ON RELIGION”    By KHUSHWANT SINGH
Have you seen God? No, I have not. Nor do I believe that anyone, at any time, past or present, has seen Him. As for me, even if I come face to face with Him, I would not recognize him. Were He to give me His visiting card and say, `I am God', I would say in utter disbelief, `Tell me another'.

However, there have been, and are today, people who claim to have seen Him and can give graphic descriptions of Him. I am not talking of people who give airy-fairy answers like, `God is everywhere; you only have to have eyes to see him', or as is more common now, `God is within you'. No X-ray of the human body shows the presence of anything resembling God. `God is truth; God is love,' say many others, as did Bapu Gandhi. I do not know what truth and love look like-one is a principle of social behaviour, the other an emotion.

THE SPEAKING TREE - DEATH, AN ENIGMA IN ANY SCHOOL OF THOUGHT

ASHOK VOHRA

Death is an enigma. According to Wittgenstein it is so because, “death is not an event in life; we do not live to experience death“. Whereas Wittgenstein attributes the mystery surrounding death to it being the limit of life, Niels Bohr treats death as mystical because “we are both spectators and actors in the great drama of existence“.Death has a mystical aura around it because its inevitability prompts us to ask questions about life and its meaning.

It may be time to rewrite history textbooks. Scientists from IIT-Kharagpur and the Archaeological Survey of India have uncovered evidence that the Indus Valley Civilisation is at least 2,500 years older than believed, and a pre-Harappan civilisation existed for at least 1,000 years before it.

These days, on every AI flight from Mumbai or Delhi to the US, one can find at least two dozen passengers who have opted for the wheelchair facility . THE SPEAKING TREE - EAT WHAT YOU WANT, BUT KNOW WHAT YOU EAT

SEEMA BURMAN
Food is whatever the five senses absorb. Sights and smell, sound, food and touch that go in through the ears, eyes, nose, mouth and skin affect body and mind. Food is important because it is visible and vibrant energy that influences us physically , emotionally and spiritually .
Ironically , even the wealthiest person cannot ensure purity of food. Bhishma Pitamah lamented on his deathbed that eating evil-minded king Duryodhana's food had made him mentally weak and he could not stand up for Draupadi when she was being disrobed in court. After lying on a deathbed of thorns, the effect of Duryodhana's food was nullified, making him feel ashamed of his weakness. Pure food is that in which purity of body and mind is used by all those involved in the whole process of producing, buying, cooking and eating.Food is to be eaten with respect for the cook, the vegetables, buyer, seller, so that gratitude is part of the system.

AARTI - FROM SIKH RELIGION

ITZZ TRUTH OF LIFE : The Beautiful 'Aarti' from Sikh Religion

Once actor Balraj Sahni asked the late Nobel Laureate Rabindra Nath Tagore, “You have written the national anthem for India . Can you write an international anthem for the whole world?” “It has already been written, not only international but for the entire universe, in the 16th century by Nanak,” replied Tagore. He referred to the Sikh Aarti (ceremony of light). Gurudev Tagore was so enamoured of this arti that he personally translated it into Bengali.

Every evening in all Gurudwaras, after the recitation of Rehraas Sahib, we can hear a melodious rendition of the Aarti sung by the Raagis in Raga Dhanashri. This is a tremendously soothing experience, capable of taking us directly into the spiritual realms of devotion through music.

As Guru Arjan Dev has written on page 393 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji - arti kirtan sada anand. Singing God’s praises is His Aarti, bringing boundless bliss.

JAI CHANDs -WHY DOES INDIA BREED SO MANY TRAITORS

Why does India breed so many traitors?

Major General Mrinal Suman

While studying Indian history in school days, one was repeatedly told that the foreign invaders resorted to ‘divide and rule’ policy to gain control over India. They were painted as unscrupulous schemers who exploited the simple, trusting and gullible Indians.
It is only at a much later stage that one realised the hollowness of the above assertion. The truth is that we are adept at producing hordes of traitors who revel in India’s ruin. Every victory of the foreign invaders was facilitated by the local collaborators who betrayed their kings for some devious reward or to settle personal scores. No fort was ever conquered without the infidelity of a trusted minister/commander.

Raghuram Ashok and his cousin Sreenivasa S.L., both Bangalore-based photographers, were intrigued by the thought of a 16th century transcription of the Sampoorna Ramayana resting just 130km from their city.
Three months ago, when they first visited the Academy of Sanskrit Research in Melkote—a temple town in Karnataka and a historical centre of Sanskrit learning—the resident scholars weren’t particularly welcoming. But persistent inquiries and several trips later, they’re now working on a self-initiated documentary project on the academy’s archives.
With more than 6,000 manuscripts in its fold, and 10,000 bodies of work spanning epic literature, general science, history and literature, the archives only whet the photographers’ interest further.

NEW DELHI
7 November 1950

My dear Jawaharlal,
Ever since my return from Ahmedabad and after the cabinet meeting the same day which I had to attend at practically fifteen minutes' notice and for which I regret I was not able to read all the papers, I have been anxiously thinking over the problem of Tibet and I thought I should share with you what is passing through my mind.

WHY GANDHI OPTED FOR NEHRU AND NOTSARDAR PATEL FOR PM

WHY GANDHI OPTED FOR NEHRU AND NOTSARDAR PATEL FOR PM
The story from different view point  & Other side of facts,

History is written by the victors". The official history of independent India was written and overseen by that faction of the Congress party which emerged victorious in the leadership tussle on the eve of independence with the tacit but partisan support of none other than the all powerful and universally venerable Mahatma Gandhi.
According to this official history, Jawahar Lal Nehru was elected as the first Prime minister of India andSardar Patel became his deputy and it was all done purely on merit.

ARMY ETHICS AND ETHOS

ARMY  ETHICS  AND  ETHOS

By       Lt Gen (Retd) S K Sinha

I served in the Army for forty years, the first few years under British rule.  We were taught never to discuss politics or financial matters in the officers’ mess.  No lady’s name other than a celebrity like Queen Victoria could be mentioned.  After the Cromwell interlude, when the Parliament was sent packing, the British Army kept itself scruplously apolitical.  In India this was all the more necessary when the freedom movement started and Indians started being inducted into the officer cadre.  We were taught that the Army was a class apart. We were different from boxwalas (word of contempt for businessmen) and should not discuss money matters.  Orders had to be carried out in the spirit of the Charge of the Light Brigade, immortalised by Tennyson.  Service before self was to be our motto.   Our first Indian Chief ensured that those high traditions were upheld despite the upheaval and turmoil of Partition, when the Army had to be vivisected and young officers with little experience, had to suddenly replace senior British officers.

POOJA FACILITY  -  FOR HINDUS FAR FROM HOME

Four Hindu priests sat cross-legged on the floor in front of silver trays of rice, flowers and vermillion powder, chanting in low baritones that reverberated off the bare walls of the old brick temple.
An iPhone propped on a chair captured the service — known as a puja — and beamed it via Skype to a home in San Francisco, where a middle-aged woman wearing a red bindi and a head scarf watched intently.

MEHBOOBA COULD CHANGE J & K

Mehbooba Mufti Could Bring Much Change in J&K

Article By Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain

(Latest assessement on the way forward for this year in J&K. Read it at this link or directly from the trailking text).
While much has been written and discussed about the situation in J&K in the last few weeks most of it has been contextual to events. The Handwara incident sent out ominous signals, the fallout wasn’t too psychologically endearing for the Security Forces (SF). The NIT incident wasn’t too positive either. When it comes to J&K, analysts including this one, tend to take every event apart and hardly concentrate on the big picture. Rarely do we have analyses and projections when things are quiet and especially when positive trends are in the making.

INDIA, WE ARE FIGHTING OUR OWN DISABLED SOLDIERS

India, We Are Fighting Our Own Disabled Soldiers

On 24 April 2016, three soldiers of the Indian Army lost their lives during a high-profile military exercise in Rajasthan. The deaths were attributed to the excessive heat, injuries sustained while para dropping from helicopters and snake bites. In this context, we delve into the life expectancy of soldiers and non-combat related injuries or health issues of soldiers.
Most nations recognise the inherent stress and strain of military service and its detrimental effect on the health and daily lives of soldiers. India does too. But only in theory, not in practice.
