GURU POORNIMA

GURU POORNIMA. - THE GURU IN YOU

On days when the moon is full, its vibration, its feel, is very different than on other days. For a spiritual seeker, this day is like a boon from nature. Earlier, Guru Purnima was among the most important festive occasions in the country. Over time, it got relegated to the background due to ignorance and so fewer people were aware of its great significance. However, it is now coming back slowly into prominence with more seekers looking for spiritual guidance.
Guru Purnima is the day the first guru was born. Once upon a time, Shiva attained and went into intense ecstatic dance on the Himalayas. When we say Shiva, in the yogic culture, we do not refer to him as a god. He is seen as the Adiyogi, or the first yogi. When his ecstasy became beyond movement, he became still. When it allowed him some movement, he danced wildly. People saw that he was experiencing something that they were unable to fathom. They came, waited and left because Shiva was oblivious of other people's presence.

Weddings. That one event where two beautiful people announce their union by calling a number of random people as witnesses. Well, I might be trivialising it a little but that's the gist of it, isn't it? What one cannot deny is that they are an absolute visual treat and in India, being home to thousands of wonderful traditions, it's never a dull affair. But beyond the common chapel weddings and the amazingly loud Punjabi weddings that we encounter more often than usual, there are many other kinds that we might not have experienced yet. Here are some of the most beautiful wedding attires from around the world that show what a visual treat weddings are.

KARGIL

KARGIL VIJAY DIVAS 26 JUL, 2016

Dear Citizens of India,

1. We wish to remind the people of India that seventeen years back on 26 Jul 1999, demonstrating raw courage, indomitable valour, steely grit and unshakable determination, our Defence Forces recaptured every inch of our mother land and either killed or threw back every Pakistani infiltrator who had deceptively and treacherously occupied the heights in Kargil Region while our then Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was extending his hands of friendship to Pakistan in Lahore.

LET US STAND BY OUR SOLDIERS

Capt Amarinder Singh

The Army must be allowed to bring militancy under control to a point where those professing it realise that the time has come to talk. Yes, people will die in the ensuing action, then so be it. Kashmir is Indian territory. If those owing allegiance to Pakistan's ISI continue to create instability, then they must face the music.

The situation in J&K is such that the Army is damned if it acts and damned if it does not. It needs the government's backing. AFP

EXPERIENCE OF A GERMAN IN INDIA

EXPERIENCE OF A GERMAN IN INDIA

Here are a number of habits I picked up while living in India:
I take my shoes off whenever I enter my house or someone else's house. I find this to be a wonderful habit. Not only because of cleanliness—who knows what I might have stepped on in the street—but also because it feels right. Some people find this strange, "You don't have to take your shoes off!" but I do it anyway.

I do this almost exclusively with my significant other and kids, but I say things like appadiya? or acchaa? when they say something interesting to me. Or sari or thiik hai. Or I say aiaiyooo! when something unfortunate happens.

KILO COURIER

KILO COURIER <http://cyclicstories.blogspot.in/2016/04/kilo-courier.html>

There is an old comrade from Daks in 43, Arun Karandikar (Kandy, Air Cmde Rtd, later a famed Indian Airlines Pilot), about 5 yrs my senior who was/ and still is, one of my role models. When I joined the AF, first met him, he was flying Daks from Jorhat. He was a brilliant pilot with no attitude, a simple man. From Jorhat he went on to fly the AN-12 and often came back to Jorhat on 'Assam Courier' trips. When someone not on the manifest ever came to ask for a lift, he would say, 'Get in if you want to, but I cannot assure you that we will not crash' !!! Usually Kandy Sir never counted the heads and I have personally seen him carry twice the number of passengers that was allowed. 'What is the use of being a good pilot if you can't put it to good use', was his usual comment. There are a lot of old and bold simple soldiers from days of yore, who took leave and came to Jorhat praying that Kandy Sir was the Capt of Assam Courier.

NIGHT WATCHMAN AND BUREUCRACY

NIGHT WATCHMAN AND BUREUCRACY!!

Once upon a time the government had a vast scrap yard in the middle of a desert. Congress said, "Someone may steal from it at night." So they created a night watchman position and hired a person for the job. Then Congress said, "How does the watchman do his job without instruction?" So they created a planning department and hired two people, one person to write the instructions, and one person to do time studies.

Then Congress said, "How will we know the night watchman is doing the tasks correctly?" So they created a Quality Control department and hired two people. One was to do the studies and one was to write the reports.

One fact stands out amongst the horrific scenes that have been played out: The kind of injuries suffered by the protesters. As many as 130 have sustained

FORWARD MARCH  - (SAINIK ASHRAM)

For some ex-servicemen in Kerala, retirement is a way to a new life. Nisary Mahesh recounts her visit to the Sainik Ashram in Kakkanad, where pensionless veterans are rehabilitated with a sense of dignity. Photographs: Sivaram V

Smartly turned out as always in crisp shirt and trousers, complete with peak cap and white canvas shoes, 92 year-old A P Peters loves chatting about the little things in life. His comrade, 90 year-old K M George, seems a little distracted though his face lights up every now and then. However, T K Bhaskaran, another nonagenarian, wears a charming innocence and is all ears to Peters.

Peters, George and Bhaskaran are bound together by more than friendship; all three were once members of the British Army of India. And after retirement, they have had no independent means of support. Today, along with five other war veterans and a few ex-servicemen the trio call the Sainik Ashram at Kakkanad in Kochi their home.

9 SIKH

9TH BATTALION SIKH REGIMENT

In 1971, 9 Sikh was manning the Cease Fire Line (CFL) — as the Line of Control (LOC) was known then — along the Shamshabari Range, extending from Tutmari Gali to Nastachun Pass in Jammu and Kashmir. Both these passes are more than 11,000 feet high.  It was tasked to attack across the CFL and capture the Kayian Bowl – ‘bowl’ in military jargon implies a small valley surrounded by steep mountain ridges – which was 3,000 feet below to the south west of Tutmari Gali. Kayian Bowl was defended by a company of Tochi Scouts which held five tactical features dominating the bowl.

Winter had set in and night temperatures were below zero degree when 9 Sikh launched its operations on the night of December 5-6, 1971. Due to paucity of resources and no road communications to Tutmari Gali, 9 Sikh had no artillery support. The unit was raised in 1963. It had some of the most dynamic young officers of the Sikh Regiment led by their equally dynamic Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Sam Chengappa. To make up for lack of fire support, 9 Sikh adopted German tactics of infiltration attacks, which were based on the concepts of ‘reconnaissance pull’ and ‘surfaces and gaps’ — an attacking force is led by the reconnaissance patrols that locate the gaps between the defences. The ‘surfaces’, i.e. the defences, are avoided and the weaker defences in the rear are attacked first, cutting off the routes of logistic maintenance and withdrawal. The stronger main defences are then attacked from the rear.

BENGALI TREASURE

WHO STOLE BENGALI TREASURE

Hosted as received. Author not known. But, interesting and throws up enough intriguing facts that encourage recall of those tumultuous events and the many colourful and egoistic persona dramatis of the cast!

To be honest, post 1971, I have not heard or read anything about the emptying of the treasury. However, I do recollect news reportage about an officer, a Maj. Gen. Mukherjea, a Division Commander serving under Lt. Gen. Sagat Singh, who was court marshaled and cashiered for transporting a truck load of stuff as his personal effects. One presumed those were spoils of war!

What surprises me, and causes an eyebrow to be raised, is the absence of any reference to this matter in the memoirs of late Lt. Gen. Jacob, who was the pivot and points man during the war of '71. As Chief of Staff, Eastern Command, and as the person who managed the entire gamut of affairs relating to the operations and the Surrender, he could not have been out of the loop on an issue as important and explosive as the looting of the state treasury! And Jacob was no one's fool and didn't pull punches: he gave it straight from the shoulder! But then, as has been said ad nauseum, covert agencies operate in the twilight zone where anything and everything is possible!

KYC , AADHAR & RBI RULES

KYC, AADHAAR & RBI RULES’

It is time to come out and say it openly. Dr Raghram Rajan’s tenure has been a big disappointment when it comes to consumer services of banks. Indeed, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) framed a wonderful consumer charter during his tenure; but that was in August 2014. The charter that mandated banks to treat consumers fairly remains toothless, since RBI gave them until July 2016 to frame their own rules and self-punishment (if any) for lapses and failures. It is mid-July, as I write this piece, and we have yet to see any bank announce a comprehensive consumer policy for its customers. Instead, here are two separate episodes of 13th July that illustrate how RBI, which oversees how banks behave, has no truck with the everyday frustrations of customers.

"लचित बोरफुकन"

 LACHIT BOR PHUKAN  - "लचित बोरफुकन"

RIVER GANGES - DYING THER

India's dying mother
by Justin Rowlatt

The Ganges is one of the greatest rivers on Earth, but it is dying.

From the icy Himalayan peaks, where it begins, right down to the Bay of Bengal, it is being slowly poisoned.

The Ganges is revered in India but it is also the sewer that carries away the waste from the 450 million people who live in its catchment area.

DESTRUCTION

SELF DESTRUCTION OF A GREAT NATION

India is the only country where there are 400+ Lt Gen rank wearing police officers  (Army has 83 Lt Gens, though being 1.3 million).
Out of 400 plus DG and ADG post officers, 40 plus are drawing salary equivalent of Army Comander  from 25 years of service till they retire( even DG NDRF having strength less then 5 infantry battalions draw Army commanders salary).
Another astonishing fact is that indian police is only organisation in world to wear Rank batches of Lt Col in 2 years of service after two years of probation and trg.
Our Majors and Lt cols address these 2 yrs mocked police boys as sir and maam, and our senior officers force this wrong precedence in name of liaison with civ auths.
Indian soldiers shouldn't be denied their due rights.Read this post and you will know that DC's, SPs and SDM's hide themselves behind curtains in calamities.

7CPC MILITARY

7th PAY COMMISSION AND THE MILITARY
                               By: Nitin A. Gokhale |

Since 29 June 2016 , the day when the Central government announced the acceptance of the 7th Pay Commission report, there have been quite a few voices of concern, anguish and plain anger have been emanating from military veterans over the issue of continuing degradation of the military’s status in the overall government hierarchy. Most of the anger is justified but some of the contentions are not, simply because they are not based on facts as they obtain at the moment.
Take the case of allowances and the case of non-functional financial upgrade have NOT been accepted by the government and remain on table for discussions and their eventual resolution. Unfortunately, in absence of the actual notification, the old issue about disparity in allowances to be given to a civil service officer posted in the north-east vis-a-vis a soldier posted in Siachen continues to be cited as fact when in reality, the government has refused to accept this anomalous recommendation. However, many write-ups, discussions, WhatsApp and Facebook messages continue to harp on this single point, creating confusion in the minds of majority of serving and retired personnel.

BRITISH EMPIRE

It was not just chance that the Sun never set on the British Empire.

Maj Gen Balhara, SC, reminisces...

Many years ago standing on the Rock at Gallipoli I had wondered what these Brits and Aussies have in them, that even with a full half-century and a quarter gone by they still throng to this desolate place—thousands of miles away from their homes—only because their nation will never allow the memories of their martyrs to be forgotten. The annual ceremony at Gallipoli is an extremely poignant and emotional affair: 2nd and 3rd generation descendants, some who never even saw the men who fell at Gallipoli, stand in solemn silence grieving with moist eyes and a lump in their throats. Australia sends at least three to four ministers while senior representatives from their MoD as well as Pentagon are also in attendance.

About 1.5 kilometres to the south west of Raja’s grave where the Lion which was part of the 4 Sikh in Poonch was laid to rest, across the Betar Nala, stands the Poonch War Memorial commemorating the siege of Poonch 1947-48 and its brave defenders led by Lt Col (later Brigadier) Pritam Singh, MC – a military legend in his lifetime who faced an ignominious end to his military career.

ISTIn December 2004, when then prime minister Manmohan Singh pressed the button at the power house of NTPC’s Chutak hydroelectric project on River Suru south of Kargil, the whole power house including the colony housing the 150 engineers and employees lit up to the applause of the audience. I wonder if Manmohan Singh was aware that this was all the lighting this power house and the contingent manning it would provide for the next few years.
On querying officials present during the event it was discovered that no transmission lines had been laid to any of the villages planned to be electrified since that was the Jammu and Kashmir government's responsibility and NTPC had no idea what was planned by the state government — talk about knee-jerk development and Parkinson’s in policy-planning. So, almost a decade went by before Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally dedicated the Chutak hydroelectric project to the nation in August 2014. How many villages were eventually lit, how many transmission lines were still to be laid in 2014 are things only the state authorities would know.

Nestled between the Betar Nala to the west and Poonch river to the south, Poonch is a historical town along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. It’s a place that occupies an important place in our military history and also one that has produced some legendary characters, including two unforgettable members of the Indian Army, who were in their own way the Rajas of Poonch.

Our logistics base for 4 Sikh in Poonch was near the old palace of its former King that was designed like a European castle. Our Officers’ Mess was called Joginder Mahal and was located in the house of a former jagirdar. Outside Joginder Mahal, under a Chinar tree, were the quarters of Havaldar Raja Singh, the unit mascot of 4 Sikh – a six-foot tall (when standing), 250 kg Himalayan black bear!
Raja’s original home was in the forested Loran Valley at the base of the Pir Panjals, where one of our long-range patrols rescued him from a pack of jackals. He was just two or three months old then and
