KARTARPUR - A BRIDGE TOO FAR

A Bridge Too Far?
Kartarpur corridor beckons, but Vajpayee’s attempt at Lahore bus service was similarly pregnant with possibility .   By  Vivek Katju (Times of India 28-Nov-2018)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has imparted an extraordinarily hopeful, if not transformative, dimension to the India-Pakistan decision to develop the Kartarpur Sahib corridor. In recalling the fall of the Berlin wall and invoking the blessings of Guru Nanak to make the corridor a ‘bridge between the two peoples’, Modi has made it far more than a means to enable the Indian Sikh community to regularly visit one of its most important places of worship.

HARMED FORCES - BY 7 CPC

Despite the 7th Pay Commission's award which gave 33 lakh government servants and 14 lakh defence personnel (with 54 lakh retirees and 18 lakh veterans) salary and pension hikes from August 1, 2016, defence forces personnel and veterans have been angry. Independent Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar is a member of Parliament's Standing Committee on Defence and tells Nalin Mehta why he thinks armed forces have been treated unfairly and why this matters:

What are the armed forces' problems with the 7th Pay Commission award?

ADMIRAL AWATI - A TRIBUTE

MANU AWATI - YOUNG MAN AND THE SEA
 By Srikant Kesnur
Below is the tribute I wrote to VAdm Manu Awati, last year, on his 90th birthday. Remember, this was before the successful Navika Sagar Parikrama - another one of his pioneering initiatives and another feather in his cap. The accompanying photograph was taken by my wife Padmaja, in INHS Asvini, last month. It's possibly one of his portait photographs. He looks so very dapper and handsome. Kindly read on, about the legend, if interested. It has been such a beautiful journey.

Manohar Prahlad Awati is a legend in the Indian Navy and, arguably, across the entire military fraternity. A retired Vice Admiral who hung his uniform in 1983, he continues to be an awe inspiring figure and a sterling example 34 years later. Today, 07 Sep 2017, as he celebrates his 90th birthday, is a welcome occasion to raise a toast to one of the icons of our times.

DEFENCE UNDER MODI

Is Modi Repeating Nehru's Mistakes
That Cost Us The 1962 Indo-China War
By C Uday Bhaskar 20 Oct 2018
For those Indians who lived through that period, 20 October 1962 will remain etched as a day of deep national humiliation.A direct threat to India's territorial integrity found the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the national security apex in Delhi floundering against a concerted Chinese military aggression in the Indian north-east that could not be countered.
A month later in November, after the fall of Bomdila (now in Arunachal Pradesh) PM Nehru spoke in anguish and reached out to " our countrymen in Assam, to whom our heart goes out at this moment ."
This was seen as a case of abject surrender and it is a different matter that the Chinese troops withdrew unilaterally after administering a 'lesson' to India. It was a costly lesson, for it is estimated that the total number of Indian Army personnel killed, wounded, missing or captured is almost 10,000.

SPIRITUALITY AND RELIGION

SPIRITUALITY AND RELIGION - NO CONFUSION
People often ask me this, "Why Spirituality?"Well, the answer is quite simple. But before we attempt to answer that, we must know the meaning of the term Spirituality and Being Spiritual. This again is very simple. What we have been doing is to confuse spirituality with religion and rituals. We think that everything that resembles religion may also be connected to Spirituality. Well, friends, Spirituality includes religion but religion does not encapsulate Spirituality. I will explain.

HYDERABAD - HISTORICAL NARRATIVE

A wonderful account of historical narrative that preceded Police Action on Hyderabad:

The Story of an Era Told without ILL WILL by MKK Nair:

"On April 30, 1948, Indian Army withdrew fully from Hyderabad. After that, Rizvi and the Razakars began to behave licentiously all over the state. Mountbatten had left and Rajaji was the Governor General. Nehru, Rajaji and Patel were all aware of the dangerous situation prevailing in Hyderabad. Patel believed that the army should be sent to put an end to the Nizam's wantonness. At about that time, the Nizam had sent an emissary to Pakistan and transferred a large sum of money from his Government account in London to Pakistan. At a cabinet meeting, Patel had described these things and demanded that army be sent to end the terror-regime in Hyderabad. Nehru who usually spoke calmly, peacefully and with international etiquette, spoke losing his composure, 'You are a total communalist.  I will never accept your recommendation.'

STATUE OF UNITY - WORTH A VISIT

STATUE OF UNITY
The Statue of Unity is a tribute to the Iron Man of India in recognition of his role to unify India into what it is today rather than 565 independent states under Maharajas which the Britishers intended to leave for us. The Statue is located near Bharuch down stream of Narmada river over looking the Sardar Dam. It is to soon become a place of International tourism where a visit is worth the journey and effort.

INFANTRY ?

Nobody who has ever donned a green beret would know how difficult it is to explain the Infantry as an arm.

Although, 'The Ultimate' requires no illustrations, here is a kaleidoscope of  snippets which would to a certain extent, conjure up the vista of the soul and spirit of the Infantry...

*You never chose Infantry, rather Infantry is when destiny chose 'you' over the rest.

Infantry is:-
- When a cold and shivering jawan gets you a cup of hot tea on a patrol break at 13,000 feet.
