TIPU SULTAN
Excerpts from Tipu's letters as researched by the distinguished Kerala historian K. M. Panicker, which he reviewed in the Bhasha Poshini magazine, August 1923:

1. Letter dated March 22, 1788, to Abdul Kadir: "Over 12,000 Hindus were honoured with Islam. There were many Namboodri Brahmins among them. This achievement should be widely publicised among the Hindus. Then the local Hindus should be brought before you and converted to Islam. No Namboodri Brahmin should be spared. "

SOLDIER - WHO HAS FAILED HIM

WHO HAS FAILED THE SOLDIERS?

The Supreme Court's verdict on the petition of 700 odd soldiers and officers was out on 30th Nov. They had petitioned that they be protected from prosecution by law in case of collateral deaths in disturbed areas where they are deployed in counter insurgency operations. If you are dealing with an opponent who is wielding the gun and fires at you, or has an intention of firing it with an intention to kill, there is no option left with a soldier expect to fire back to protect his life. The Insurgency is never a clean operation, where the battle lines are neatly defined and drawn.

KARTARPUR - A BRIDGE TOO FAR

A Bridge Too Far?
Kartarpur corridor beckons, but Vajpayee’s attempt at Lahore bus service was similarly pregnant with possibility .   By  Vivek Katju (Times of India 28-Nov-2018)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has imparted an extraordinarily hopeful, if not transformative, dimension to the India-Pakistan decision to develop the Kartarpur Sahib corridor. In recalling the fall of the Berlin wall and invoking the blessings of Guru Nanak to make the corridor a ‘bridge between the two peoples’, Modi has made it far more than a means to enable the Indian Sikh community to regularly visit one of its most important places of worship.

HARMED FORCES - BY 7 CPC

Despite the 7th Pay Commission's award which gave 33 lakh government servants and 14 lakh defence personnel (with 54 lakh retirees and 18 lakh veterans) salary and pension hikes from August 1, 2016, defence forces personnel and veterans have been angry. Independent Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar is a member of Parliament's Standing Committee on Defence and tells Nalin Mehta why he thinks armed forces have been treated unfairly and why this matters:

What are the armed forces' problems with the 7th Pay Commission award?

ADMIRAL AWATI - A TRIBUTE

MANU AWATI - YOUNG MAN AND THE SEA
 By Srikant Kesnur
Below is the tribute I wrote to VAdm Manu Awati, last year, on his 90th birthday. Remember, this was before the successful Navika Sagar Parikrama - another one of his pioneering initiatives and another feather in his cap. The accompanying photograph was taken by my wife Padmaja, in INHS Asvini, last month. It's possibly one of his portait photographs. He looks so very dapper and handsome. Kindly read on, about the legend, if interested. It has been such a beautiful journey.

Manohar Prahlad Awati is a legend in the Indian Navy and, arguably, across the entire military fraternity. A retired Vice Admiral who hung his uniform in 1983, he continues to be an awe inspiring figure and a sterling example 34 years later. Today, 07 Sep 2017, as he celebrates his 90th birthday, is a welcome occasion to raise a toast to one of the icons of our times.

DEFENCE UNDER MODI

Is Modi Repeating Nehru's Mistakes
That Cost Us The 1962 Indo-China War
By C Uday Bhaskar 20 Oct 2018
For those Indians who lived through that period, 20 October 1962 will remain etched as a day of deep national humiliation.A direct threat to India's territorial integrity found the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the national security apex in Delhi floundering against a concerted Chinese military aggression in the Indian north-east that could not be countered.
A month later in November, after the fall of Bomdila (now in Arunachal Pradesh) PM Nehru spoke in anguish and reached out to " our countrymen in Assam, to whom our heart goes out at this moment ."
This was seen as a case of abject surrender and it is a different matter that the Chinese troops withdrew unilaterally after administering a 'lesson' to India. It was a costly lesson, for it is estimated that the total number of Indian Army personnel killed, wounded, missing or captured is almost 10,000.

SPIRITUALITY AND RELIGION

SPIRITUALITY AND RELIGION - NO CONFUSION
People often ask me this, "Why Spirituality?"Well, the answer is quite simple. But before we attempt to answer that, we must know the meaning of the term Spirituality and Being Spiritual. This again is very simple. What we have been doing is to confuse spirituality with religion and rituals. We think that everything that resembles religion may also be connected to Spirituality. Well, friends, Spirituality includes religion but religion does not encapsulate Spirituality. I will explain.

HYDERABAD - HISTORICAL NARRATIVE

A wonderful account of historical narrative that preceded Police Action on Hyderabad:

The Story of an Era Told without ILL WILL by MKK Nair:

"On April 30, 1948, Indian Army withdrew fully from Hyderabad. After that, Rizvi and the Razakars began to behave licentiously all over the state. Mountbatten had left and Rajaji was the Governor General. Nehru, Rajaji and Patel were all aware of the dangerous situation prevailing in Hyderabad. Patel believed that the army should be sent to put an end to the Nizam's wantonness. At about that time, the Nizam had sent an emissary to Pakistan and transferred a large sum of money from his Government account in London to Pakistan. At a cabinet meeting, Patel had described these things and demanded that army be sent to end the terror-regime in Hyderabad. Nehru who usually spoke calmly, peacefully and with international etiquette, spoke losing his composure, 'You are a total communalist.  I will never accept your recommendation.'

STATUE OF UNITY - WORTH A VISIT

STATUE OF UNITY
The Statue of Unity is a tribute to the Iron Man of India in recognition of his role to unify India into what it is today rather than 565 independent states under Maharajas which the Britishers intended to leave for us. The Statue is located near Bharuch down stream of Narmada river over looking the Sardar Dam. It is to soon become a place of International tourism where a visit is worth the journey and effort.

I did YOs (SS/NT)-8 from Sep 70 to Apr 1971. Maj SRR Aiyengar (later, Lt Gen) was our Gp Offr and Maj BP Murgai (Maj Gen) commanded the Junior Wing. Those who know them, or still better, have served along, would agree that both were ideal leadership choices for grooming the fledgling Sparrows into good Signallers. They still remain inspiring role models for the whole of our generation that trained under them. ‘Just not done in Corps of Signals’ would how the caution be whenever we erred. We were told that Signals were the best supporting arm and we did not disagree to agree in spite of the fact that only a few of us had opted for Signals before commissioning. Credit goes to their persona, character, style and substance, that, by the time we finished our Course we were a highly motivated lot. The level of our motivation was amply reflected in our performance during 1971 War.

First, to resize the army so that flab is removed and operational capabilities increase.

Second, to enhance funds in the Capital Account for modernisation, by reducing expenditure under the Revenue Account.

It's a known fact in history, that in September of 1965 when Pakistan was on the verge of victory in Kashmir with the Cchamb offensive, a three pronged attack on Jammu Akhnoor and Pathankot to cut off Kashmir from the rest of India; one man stood up... Lt Gen Harbaksh Singh the Western Army Commander.
The towering Khalsa, took upon himself to break the defensive mindset, and went on the offensive... thus, for the second time in history after the Khalsa offensive by the legendary Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa against the Pathans in 19th century; the Indian Army went on the offensive... Lahore was attacked.

INTRODUCTION TO REGTL LIFE

PADINALE Introduction To Regiment Life
                           By    Brig SS Jaswal
Introduction - The first day in any organisation is memorable, be it school, college, NDA, IMA, Regiment, etc. We Sappers were doing our YOs Course in CME, Pune, when, towards the end, our postings were announced. I was allotted 14 Engineer Regiment of the Madras Sappers. Luckily, another officer, Vijay Singh Negi (Chhotu) was also posted to 14 along with me - that was great. In fact, another technical officer doing the YOs course with us, was also posted to 14, but he joined a bit later. It is customary for Regimental officers posted in CME or under going courses to call the YOs posted to their Regiments for a dinner, as a prelude to initial introduction to the Regiment. In case of 14, there were three senior officers under going the degree course. So they took us all for a dinner to Three Coins in Pune on their scooters. We tried to probe what to expect on joining, but they said, " We won`t tell you, otherwise you will miss the fun".

YOUR PRAYER

How To Be Sure God Listens To Your Prayers
There are certain requirements we must fulfill before God will listen to our prayers.

We Must Belong to God.
"There is one God and one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus" (1Timothy 2:5). Because Jesus is the mediator between us and God, we must give Him our total allegiance.
Before I yielded the control of my life to Jesus Christ, I would pray, but I was never sure if God was listening or would answer. After I asked Him to be the Lord of my life, I had confidence that God was hearing and answering my prayers.

India was unprepared and was shocked at the turn of events. This was the first major war in the subcontinent since World War II.

FORCES IN MODI'S INDIA

HOW CAN DEFENCE FORCES BECOME RELEVANT IN MODI'S INDIA?

The number one Law of Power is "never outshine the master judgement." This is enumerated in a bestselling and widely read book, "The 48 Laws of Power (1998)", by American author Robert Greene.
Why have the defence forces become so powerless in our country in spite of wielding most of the weapons? It is common to hear in the gathering of the armed forces officers that the bureaucrats have marginalised the defence forces and that their status is being eroded continuously. The forces also complain against the politicians for their lack of knowledge about the military affairs and their apparent distrust of defence forces. It is assumed that the politicians are gradually reducing the relevance and status of defence forces to emphasise civilian control and to preclude any chance of military takeover of the government.

” The Pakistan Army is a politically important organization, yet its opacity has hindered academic research. We use open sources to construct unique new data on the backgrounds, careers, and post-retirement activities of post-1971 corps commanders and directors-general of Inter-Services Intelligence. We provide evidence of bureaucratic predictability and professionalism while officers are in service. After retirement, we show little involvement in electoral politics but extensive involvement in military-linked corporations, state employment, and other positions of influence. This combination provides Pakistan’s military with an unusual blend of professional discipline internally and political power externally – even when not directly ruling”.

Do we need to review medical education in India? I feel any human activity needs periodic review, starting from daily to periodic review depending on the importance of the activity. Medical education has never been subjected to any major review in the 20th and 21st centuries in India. So it is time that we spent a few minutes on the topic.

GOVERNANCE AND RANKS

 GOVERNANCE AND RANKS

By Devendra Saksena | August 21, 2018

The recent recommendation of the armed forces cadre review committee that every army officer should retire at the rank of Major-General or above has put our governance structure in the dock.
The Committee, which has also recommended the abolition of a couple of middle-level military ranks, makes no bones that these radical proposals emanate from a desire of army officers to attain parity with their civilian counterparts.
Given the fact that the rank structure in the Army is as old as the Army itself and is essential for maintaining discipline, serious thought should be given to put in place measures that would address the feeling of deprivation and hurt in the armed forces.

How easy it is to say “I love you”,but do both the parties understand the meaning, well I am talking about young adults of either gender and meaning no offence intended for aberrations intended or unintended. Psychology says that love in such cases has three aspects to it First is passion , which is natural with coming of age, second is intimacy which is more of accepting each other living together with individual strong and weak points and finding a happy balance and tolerance to live happily ever after till death does them apart. Third is commitment to each other and mutual inter dependency in times good and bad and in joy and sorrow.
