PURPOSE OF LIFE

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF LIFE
For the longest time, I believed that there's only purpose of life: And that is to be happy.Right? Why else go through all the pain and hardship? It's to achieve happiness in some way.
And I'm not the only person who believed that. In fact, if you look around you, most people are pursuing happiness in their lives.

BEACH VILLAINs

Every Generation Gets the Beach Villain It Deserves
Aggressive, shameless, obsessive and optimistic, the tech billionaire Vinod Khosla is willing to litigate the California coast for the rest of his life.

From the New York Times
By Nellie Bowles, Aug. 30, 2018

It sounds simple. For nearly a decade, the venture capitalist Vinod Khosla has been fighting in court to keep the public off a piece of beach that abuts his property on the Pacific coast. What could be more familiar than another case of rich Californian versus the oceangoing citizenry?

EAST WEST LOVE STORY

EAST WEST LOVE STORY
By Lt Col Prakash T Joshi

How easy it is to say “I love you”,but do both the parties understand the meaning, well I am talking about young adults of either gender and meaning no offence intended for aberrations intended or unintended. Psychology says that love in such cases has three aspects to it First is passion , which is natural with coming of age, second is intimacy which is more of accepting each other living together with individual strong and weak points and finding a happy balance and tolerance to live happily ever after till death does them apart. Third is commitment to each other and mutual inter dependency in times good and bad and in joy and sorrow.

KILLER ROBOTS

Ethical Dimensions of Killer Robots
On March 9, 2009, the Nasdaq was at a low of 1,268.64. Today, it is trading at an all-time high of 8,015.69. That's gain of 532% from the bottom. AI & robotics which were just 02% of valuation in Nasdaq listing, now make up to 24% of Nasdaq valuation. No doubt, It's been an amazing and historical run. However, world is torn by rise & rise of robotics.
When Arnold Schwarzenegger's T-800 character says "I'll be back" in 1984's sci-fi hit "The Terminator," few, if any, thought the line would be a prescient look into the future.

DEFENDER - BUT WHO IS TO DEFEND HIM

In Defence of the Defender

No one loves a warrior till the enemy is at the gate. War, internal law and order, floods, bridge collapse in Mumbai or elsewhere, child stuck in a drain – call in the military. The organization, discipline and procedures of the military ensures that succour is provided in the least possible time without meddling or posturing.
But with the latest set of actions against the military by India's courts and political parties, this is about to change. Three examples illustrate why:

ARMY SHOOTS ITSELF IN THE FOOT

*ARMY SHOOTS ITSELF IN THE FOOT*
The Tribune' 26 June 2012       No change even today as such holds good.
*PERSONNEL POLICIES : ARMY SHOOTS ITSELF IN THE FOOT*
    By Major Navdeep Singh

Military turning against the military: In personnel policies, the Army is fast becoming its own greatest enemy

Humans are alike. Wearing a uniform may suppress, but not fully insulate them from corruption, greed, power-play et al, vices inherent to human race. But besides grit and courage, what sets military personnel apart from the others is the sharp ability to self-destruct and to invent self-defeatist masterstrokes as far as welfare, manpower and personnel policies are concerned.

CHINA's MILITRARY MIGHT

CHINA'S MILITARY MIGHT  - 2018
New Pentagon report details 'massive' Chinese military threat:

Aircraft carriers, stealth fighters, anti-satellite weapons, drones, cyber attack technology and a growing arsenal of ballistic missiles are all among a series of Chinese weapons said to present serious concerns for Pentagon leaders and weapons developers, according to DoD’s annual China report.

BIRDS NEST

BIRD’S NEST IN MY HOUSE
Lt Col HS Bhandari

We have cane swing ( Jhula) fixed on the front verandah. Almost a decade ago a bird (rather a couple) made the nest on this swing in spite of our efforts to dissuade them. When we finally relented, the ‘construction’ started rather fast and astonishingly a beautiful nest came up. We observed very closely their activities (shall we call pre-natal preparations?) They were very meticulous and sincere creatures. While the would-be mother sat on the nest, her partner arranged for security needs. When we saw the mother hatching the eggs, she was very protective of her eggs with ‘complete disregard to her personal safety’. She stoutly defended her ‘nest’ feeling our closer proximity. And once the hatchlings emerged, she became very aggressive and did not allow us to go near. Whenever we ventured, she would get offensive and near assault us literally. Perforce, we had to resort to rear gate

ETHICS IN CYBER WARFARE

ETHICS IN CYBER WARFARE
By
Lt Gen S R R Aiyengar, PVSM,AVSM ,VSM (Retd)
 Introduction
The idea of ‘ethics’ as pertaining to conflict in the newly identified cyber domain is becoming increasingly recognized as an important sub-set of military ethics. The range of significant topics include  background policy considerations regarding the conditions under which  a cyber attack might be morally justified and increasingly questions about the appropriate professional conduct of ‘cyber warriors’.

MY TRYST WITH MIL MEDICOS

MY TRYST WITH MILITARY MEDICOS
By Lt Col HS Bhandari

On 3 Dec 1971, I landed at Jhangar Base ( 4 Garh Rif) on my first op familiarization programme, sometime in the afternoon. I found every officer excepting the Medical Officer (Captain from AMC) had moved to their forward operational positions (FDLs). As a 2/Lt from the Corps of Signals (Sparrow Minor), I was still a kind of welcome visitor. When I reported my arrival to their CO, he told me to stay back with the RMO that night.

A HOLE IN ONE

A HOLE IN ONE - by Col Deepak Kher

What could be so very difficult putting a golf ball of the diameter of 1.68 inches into a hole of 4.25 inches diameter on a manicured green grass surface? Well, ask a golfer whether amateur or professional and you could be listening to stories all day.

Now translate that to putting that ball into the hole over a distance 160 yards with a few trees and bunkers thrown in and you will get the idea that this indeed is a miracle which happens to a select few.

CAREER CHOICES

CAREER CHOICES -   By Col Deepak Kher

I was born in a fauzi family and later went on to join the Sainik School at Satara. These two events sealed my career choice even before I realised that there could be other careers as well. Joining the armed forces alone became the goal in life; after all getting ones name on the roll of honour at the School was and probably still is a major achievement.  Having now retired after serving in the Army and later in a public sector undertaking, one looks back with nostalgia at some of the career choices that are available in the Govt.

AFSPA - MILITARY OPERATIONS

IF NO AFSPA - WHO WILL FIGHT INSURGENCY AND TERRORISM FOR INDIA?
Col Alok Asthana ( Retired), THANE

356 serving personnel have approached the S C with some prayer regarding the AFSPA.  The petition has drawn adverse comments from all sections of society, which have not taken this act of serving personnel approaching the court, lightly. Social media is ablaze with very strong comments, but they are just opinions of individuals. It is only right that we allow them to have their say. However, what worries the soldier community is the tone of responsible media. India Express, one of the most respected newspapers of India, has published an editorial – Crossing the Line – on 22 August.  Since this must be treated as representative of the most responsible voice of Indian media, it will benefit the nation if this editorial is dissected.

MEDICINES - DO THEY EXPIRE

Friends, please read in your own interest.

Do Medicines Really Expire or Are we taken for a ride?
By Richard Altschuler

A FAMILY OF DOCTORS IN ENGLAND & IN MUMBAI HAVE BEEN HAMMERING THIS
POINT THAT MEDICINES DON'T EXPIRE.

Does the expiration date on a bottle of a medication mean anything?
If a bottle of Tylenol, for example, says something like "Do not use after June 1998," and it is August 2002, should you take the Tylenol? Should you discard it? Can you get hurt if you take it? Will it simply have lost its potency and do you no good?

RAM RAHIM - PANCHKULA

W(o)e the People. W(o)e the State. August 28, 2017  Tanu Mehta Independent Legal Counsel, Mediator and Conciliator

The Ram Rahim case has shocked and outraged our national opinion. How could thousands of followers commit arson and loot for a conman who was convicted as a rapist?

Everyone asks this question, but few want to go beyond the rhetoric for the answers. We are ready to blame the religious charlatans, the politicians and the rioting public. But we need to understand the why's and how's of this phenomena. Here is an attempt to answer.

KEMPY'S NOSE - Air Force Adventure

KEMPY'S NOSE -   Air Force Adventure

Another GEM from Wg Cdr Unni Kartha (Retd) *

The dark, ominous, thunder heads had been rising from the depths of Subansary valley all morning. The orographic winds pushed them up the slopes and the impetus helped it to climb higher and higher till the cataclysmic thermodynamics of thunder clouds unleashed enough energy to help them climb unrestricted to unimaginable height, hell bent on destruction around 'Mechuka'. I was in the middle of it.
